DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMPOSITE AND GIC

There is difference between composite and GIC are as follows-
⦁ The composite is a restorative material bonds with the tooth mechanically while GIC bonds chemically with the tooth.
⦁ Composites are available in different shades according to tooth color. But GIC is available only in few shades.
⦁ Strength wise composite is stronger than GIC.
⦁ Both composite and GIC are good material for filling your back teeth and are commonly used.
⦁ The choice depends on what type of cavity you have in your tooth.
⦁ If it is a small cavity then GIC can be used.
⦁ If the cavity is a bit more-deeper than you may need to use a stronger material like resin- modified GIC or a composite.
⦁ Composite is usually used for front teeth where the color is important, as it is available in different shades

Indication of GIC-

  1. Restoration of erosive/abrasive lesions without cavity preparation.
  2. Sealing and filling of occlusal pit and fissures.
  3. Restoration of primary teeth.
  4. Restoration of Class V carious lesions.
  5. Restoration of Class III carious lesions, preferably using lingual approach.
  6. Repair of defective margins in restorations.
⦁ Minimal cavity preparations in a proximal lesions through buccal and occlusal approach

Indication of composite-

  1. Primary caries followed by tooth discoloration, tooth fracture and erosion for both genders.
  2. While the principal reason for the replacement of composite restorations was secondary caries followed by tooth discoloration, loss of filling.

Difference between procedure of composite and GIC-
⦁ In GIC filling, manipulation is needed.
⦁ Mix powder and liquid in proper ratio with plastic spatula in restorative consistency then apply on tooth.
⦁ While in composite filling we have to use etching material, bond and light curing.
⦁ Isolation is important in composite because they don’t tolerate even a bit moisture.
⦁ When tooth may in a contact with saliva or water then bond does not attach to tooth properly therefore it may cause failure in a composite filling.
⦁ GIC is ideal for the pre-cooperative or uncooperative child as well as the high caries risk child. Because ability to bond chemically is difficult in children.
⦁ Therefore, GIC is better material than composite in children.
