Do’s and Dont’s After Tooth Extraction

WHAT IS TOOTH EXTRACTION?

Tooth extraction is the removal of teeth from the socket of its bone. It is a relatively quick procedure that is performed by the dentist or dental surgeon.

They remove tooth various reasons.some of the common reasons are dental cavities, injury in teeth, Wisdom tooth, Braces Treatment, gum disease.

You’ll most likely feel some discomfort or pain after your extraction. It’s also normal to see some swelling in your face. Proper care after extraction can reduce your pain.

DO’S AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION :

The way you care for yourself after the tooth extraction can make all the difference in your recovery. Here’s a list of what to do after a tooth extraction:

  • Follow the pre and post instructions properly that are given by our concerned dentist. 
  • Take rest for at least the day of extraction according to what time your extraction procedure has been done.
  • Follow the instructions to stop the bleeding.
  • The patient is supposed to bite on to the cotton gauze pack given by the dentist at the site of extraction as tightly as possible, which will help the blood clot formation. The blood clot needs some time to retract. The blood clot retraction time is around 45-60 minutes. So the patient is asked to bite and close his mouth firmly on the cotton gauze pack. Applying pressure over an extended period of time is the key.
  • The patient is asked to take the medicines as prescribed by your dentist immediately after oral surgery. If you’re worried about the cost of the medicines, ask for an affordable dental care alternative.
  • After one hour, the patient can remove the cotton gauze pack out and throw it in the dustbin. The patient is asked to have food items like ice cream, cold milk, etc.
  • On the day of extraction, the patient is asked to have soft, liquid or semisolid foodstuffs like curd rice, soups, mashed potatoes, yogurts, milkshakes, smoothies etc.etc. in his diet.
  • The patient is asked to have only cold foodstuffs.
  • Warm saline rinses: After 48 hours of extraction, gently rinse your mouth with warm water to clean it out after eating food.patient is supposed to gargle with warm saline and a pinch of salt at least 3-4 times every day and continue till 15 days. The main aim of warm saline rinse is to clean the area of extractions it is not possible to brush the socket.
  • Use a gauze pad to stop any kind of bleeding from the extraction site.
  • Use pillows to prop up your head up.
  • Diet should be in liquid or semisolid form.
  • If the patient gets swelling at the site of extraction apply ice pack externally for 15 minutes at a time. to reduce the swelling.

DONT’S AFTER TOOTH EXTRACTION :

  • Till 1 hr of extraction, do not eat and drink water.
  • Do not spit out on the day of extraction because spitting forcefully may cause dislodging of the blood clot, which is not at all desirable. The patient is asked to swallow all the saliva inside. If at all there is an emergency, please do not spit forcefully, slowly you can.
  • If else swelling appears at the site of extraction, the patient is asked not to apply any hot water pack or balm in that area, it will cause an increase in the swelling and discomfort.
  • Do not do any type of exercise for at least 12 to 24 hrs after extraction.
  • Do not do any heavy lifting or move your head forcefully for some days.
  • Do not rinse your mouth for 24 hrs, after tooth removal.
  • Do not brush the extraction site for the first few days after treatment, but you can gently wipe it with soft gauze to keep it clean.
  • Do not have hot foodstuffs or drink until the numbness has worn off.
  • Do not drink from straw, spirit, or do any type of action that could put pressure on the tooth removal site.
  • Do not irritate the extraction site.
  • Do not drink alcohol for 24 hrs after treatment.
  • Do not smoke in general, but for at least a few days after the extraction.
  • Do not ignore any post-operative pain or concern. Your dentist needs to know about any problems you experience after oral surgery in order to help you heal properly.
