Professional bleaching is the most usual method of tooth\nwhitening. Your dental team will be able to tell you if you are suitable for\nthe treatment, and will supervise it if you are. First the dental team will put\na rubber shield or a gel on your gums to protect them. They will then apply the\nwhitening product to your teeth, using a specially made tray which fits into\nyour mouth like a mouthguard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018active ingredient’ in the product is usually hydrogen\nperoxide or carbamide peroxide. As the active ingredient is broken down, oxygen\ngets into the enamel on the teeth and the tooth colour is made lighter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How long does this take?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The total teeth whiitening<\/a> treatment can usually be done within three to four weeks. First, you will need two or three visits to the dentist. Your dental team will need to make a mouthguard and will take impressions for this at the first appointment. Once your dental team has started the treatment, you will need to continue the treatment at home. This means regularly applying the whitening product over two to four weeks, for 30 minutes to one hour at a time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Whitening Work on All Teeth?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

No, which is why it\u2019s important to talk to your dentist before\ndeciding to whiten your teeth, as whiteners may not correct all types of\ndiscoloration. For example, yellow teeth will probably bleach well, brown teeth\nmay not respond as well and teeth with gray tones may not bleach at all.\nWhitening will not work on caps, veneers, crowns or fillings.\nIt also won\u2019t be effective if your tooth discoloration is caused by medications or\na tooth injury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
